In 1978 Link started work as a reporter covering agriculture, politics and education for Alberta Report, a weekly newsmagazine founded by his father Ted in 1973. During this time he won consecutive first prizes for political journalism at the Western Magazine Awards in Vancouver. After 1985 he served in the dual capacity of editor and publisher, responsible for editorial and business operations. The magazine had a permanent staff of about one hundred people, publishing three editions in four provinces, and a peak circulation of 60,000 weekly copies. It was widely recognized as the voice of western conservatism, a stalwart champion of freedom of speech and religion, and a significant factor in the rise of the Reform Party, Triple E Senate reform, and opposition to big government and deficit spending. For 18 years Link wrote a weekly current affairs column that was widely circulated. The magazine had an audited readership of 250,000 across Canada. The magazine closed in 2003. Since then Link has headed a new national advocacy group, the Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy, to carry forward some of the ideas Alberta Report promoted for thirty years. |
